Chris Evitts – “save me from tomorrow” – September 8-30th, 2018

Artist Chris Evitts

September 8-3oth
“save me from tomorrow” – new paintings.

When this work was still in it’s embryonic early days I thought the show would be about the pall of anxiety that we find ourselves in right now, trump/brexit/Ford/……yadayadayada. As the painting took shape and started the sprawl across the studio I realized the work was shinning a light on one of my own personal times of anxiety, my immigration back to Canada from England. The world of Chris aged 11 was pretty idyllic, a seaside town, football on the green, green fields, fish and chips, friends, the beach, and then it stopped. We were leaving. Back to Canada, where I was born, which I did not know, at all. In my mind, this was a frightening prospect. Frigid Arctic conditions wild animals. A scary world made up of long-distance truckers, tobacco-chewing Marlboro men. It was to be a world filled with people wearing blue jeans (how odd?), drug addicts, and a general feeling that everything I held to be real, and good, and joyful was being taken away. Needless to say I was a bit of a clammy, little ginger wreck. And so, this show is a bit of a mash up of new fears and forebodings, and ancient personal anxieties, that all seem quaint now.

Meet Chris Saturday September 8th from 2-5pm.

CONTACT – Larry Williamson – Month of May 2018

A description of Four Blocks

What to do when one’s physical activity is suddenly and seriously restricted? Williamson loves to wander and explore the city, but after suffering a heart attack his rambling range was abruptly constrained to no more than about four blocks. His neighbourhood, so familiar, had always been overlooked as he went in search of more interesting sights further afield. But with this new challenge of limited roaming, Williamson discovered much to appreciate in his immediate neighbourhood.

Ulisa Dekaj “Place of rest” –  March 3rd – 30th, 2018

Ulisa Dekaj – “Place of rest”

Exhibition: March 3rd – 30th, 2018
Reception: March 3rd, 2018 – 7-9pm

“Place of rest

In Albanian the word “mriz” translates as “a place of rest under the shade”. In the highlands, I discovered another dimension of it. For the people living there it is something spiritual. It’s a place in nature that one feels connected to, where one feels in sync and at rest. One finds it by becoming aware of it. Everyone has their own tree, the place where the vibration is right with their energy.

I see this “place” as internal as well as external and I explore the act of becoming aware of it in my work. I begin by removing my characters from their original context and placing them in a solitary place. Through meditative and repetitive mark making, I attempt to convey the vibration of this “place” around them. The characters remain in the consciousness of the previous context from which they are removed and coexist with the new surrounding, still unaware of it.”

“When I look at my paintings, I see more than what I thought I was painting. The colours and the shapes are what I want. And the spaces. But there are more true feelings and more ideas that I see after the painting is finished.”

On exhibition at COBALT GALLERY

February 9th to 18th
